TL;DR ·

Westfield already had a trade school; now it gets a full university in the new car-free district: administration building, dorms, study hall, a football stadium with an eagle mascot, a parking lot with accessible and EV spaces, and a new tram line. University-style low- and high-rise housing, schools, a library and a botanical garden follow, and the city passes 131,000.

What happens in this episode

The district built in episode 34 has no road connection to the outside world, so you’ll only see police cars, trams, buses and garbage trucks there. A few cars appeared anyway, maybe a hiccup after reloading. Ending free public transport made weekly income jump. A few hundred citizens left at first, but they came back. Business taxes went down again, because I need the offices.

How it was built

Unique buildings and the medical center

The High Interest Tower, courthouse and skyscraper went in last time to unlock the medical center. In SimCity 4 a similar building covered almost the whole region. Here it doesn’t, so the doctor’s offices stay. Roundabouts aren’t my thing in real life, but they’re very efficient in Cities: Skylines. Lane management matters even more.

Westfield University

There’s a trade school but no university yet, so a big rectangle along the tram line becomes a university campus: the administration building in the centre, dorms, a study hall, groundskeeping, a club, paths and water pipes straight into the campus. A football stadium is huge, but I wanted a football team. Free lunch, academic staff, a cheerleading budget and four coaches. A new tram line serves it.

Stadium parking

No homes right next to the stadium because of the noise. Instead, a big parking lot with spaces for disabled people close to the entrance and for electric cars. I’ve been to American football games in the US, Seattle Seahawks against the Oakland Raiders, and the scale of stadium parking there is amazing. Trees around the stadium dampen the noise, and the team has an eagle mascot.

A university town

Low-rise homes near the university feel typical for a campus area, with residence halls nearby. Node Controller removed too many pedestrian crossings on a busy road. Small cul-de-sacs, high- and low-rise zones, a bus line, elementary and high schools, a library, a botanical garden and a Japanese garden followed. Parks help high-rise homes develop quickly.

Traffic and tourism

The standard crossings at the district edge needed lane rules: no lane switching, turn lanes and straight lanes. A park was placed with Move It, taxi stands were squeezed in with Anarchy, and a sightseeing bus depot went in. Westfield passed 131,000 citizens.

FAQ

Should I build roundabouts in Cities: Skylines?

I don't like them in real life, but in the game they're very efficient at critical points. Lane management matters even more, though.

Does the medical center cover the whole city?

No. Unlike similar buildings in SimCity 4, it doesn't cover everything — removing doctor's offices didn't work.

Do parks help high-rise housing develop?

Yes. Leisure options like parks and gardens nearby help high-rise residential buildings develop much faster.
