TL;DR ·

Verville had been missing something essential the whole time: postal services. Post offices and a sorting facility go in across the city, along with more fire stations, child and elder care, crematoriums and schools. The university reaches three stars, a first tram network loops through the newer districts, libraries and high schools tackle education, radio masts and a disaster response unit cover the city — and Verville passes 100,000.

What happens in this episode

This is the second take of episode 12. I was trying a new recording device to take load off my computer, and a two-hour recording the day before had no audio at all. This time I do have a plan, because there’s something essential I’d been missing all along: postal services.

How it was built

Post offices

Businesses and citizens needed it, and I simply forgot. In a previous city, adding post offices and a sorting facility gave a huge boost. Verville was at 87,000. Post offices go wherever there’s reasonable space, including two on the university campus, plus a post sorting facility. That means more trucks on the road, but people want it.

Services everywhere

The fire coverage gaps got closed, including one for the industrial area. Child health centres, elder care, more crematoriums and missing water pipes followed, because I can afford it and want people to feel taken care of.

University and schools

The university reached three stars: a library, an IT club, a commencement office and a statue. More schools were squeezed in with Move It, including a classic university that fits the layout better than a modern institute, plus an elementary school and a firehouse.

A tram network

To take load off the roads, some roads are upgraded for trams. They don’t look very beautiful. The Undo mod saved me from a few mistakes. A tram depot goes in, and a first line loops through the newer part of town, avoiding big detours.

Utilities and education

Another power plant, a water outlet, two tank reservoirs and two pollution-free incinerators. Many people were still uneducated, so more public libraries (always crucial in SimCity) and high schools went in, plus university funding and free lunches. Verville passed 100,000 citizens, though the new residential areas still weren’t filling. Trees help with noise, while the commercial and entertainment districts stay loud.

Disaster readiness

Crime is almost non-existent, but unemployment is high. Maybe some industry would help, but there’s no good spot for it. A disaster response unit, big radio masts, small ones hidden in parks and on campus, a VLF radar and a deep space radar now cover the city. A few wind turbines fixed a power shortfall. I’m also thinking about a SimCity 4 series, a game I spent so many hours on.

FAQ

Do post offices matter in Cities: Skylines?

Yes — businesses and citizens want mail service. Adding post offices and a sorting facility gave a noticeable boost in an earlier city too.

Are libraries important for education?

They were crucial in SimCity, and they help in Cities: Skylines too, along with enough elementary and high school capacity.

How do you cover a city with disaster warnings?

Big radio masts have a huge radius; fill the remaining gaps with small radio masts, which can be hidden in parks.
