TL;DR ·

Parking lots in Cities: Skylines need the Parking Lot mod, which adds parking roads and spaces that cims actually use. Lay out service roads first (Anarchy helps), add parking spaces in the size that fits, fix stray markers with Move It and ban roadside parking nearby with TM:PE so cars fill the lot.

· What you need

Parking lots fix one of the most visible problems in a dense Cities: Skylines city: streets lined with parked cars around every stadium, mall and busy centre. Roadside parking isn’t just ugly. Cars slowing down to park and pull out block a lane, and in busy districts that’s enough to back up a whole street. The Parking Lot mod adds lots that citizens actually use.

Is parking really the problem?

Look for a lot of roadside parking around venues, shopping centres or your downtown. If the parked cars line every street within a few blocks, and the traffic overlay shows slow, red streets right there, a parking lot will help. If traffic is bad but nobody’s parking, the problem is elsewhere: junctions, lane use or missing transit.

Building a lot

  1. Find the mod in game (1:52). It adds parking networks to the roads menu.
  2. Look through the available lots (3:08): different sizes and layouts, from a few spaces along a service road to large surface lots.
  3. Lay out service roads first (4:58). These are the aisles cars drive through. Network Anarchy lets them go where the game normally refuses, for example close to buildings (5:21).
  4. Compare the parking space sizes (7:22) and pick the one that fits the space. Bigger isn’t automatically better; a lot that’s too big for the area looks empty and wastes land.
  5. Add the parking spaces along the service roads (8:06).
  6. If markers don’t show up properly, adjust them with Move It.
  7. Beautify the lot with trees, hedges and props (12:44). A row of trees between the lot and the street makes a big difference.

Make cars use it

Citizens prefer the kerb. It’s closer. To fill your lot, disallow roadside parking on the surrounding streets with TM:PE. I did this several times in the Westfield series. It also frees up a lane on those streets, which helps traffic twice.

TM:PE’s parking options make this even more realistic: with its advanced parking AI, citizens actually search for a space and walk from where they parked, so the location of your lots starts to matter.

Where to put parking

  • Next to the destination, not in front of it. A lot one street behind the stadium keeps the main road free.
  • At the edge of walkable districts. Park-and-walk keeps cars out of shopping streets.
  • At train stations in the suburbs. Park-and-ride turns drivers into passengers before they reach the congested centre.

Common problems

The lot stays empty. Roadside parking nearby is still allowed, or the lot isn’t connected properly to the street. Check both.

Cars queue at the entrance. One entrance for a big lot is too few. Add a second access road or split the lot.

Parking markers float or sink. The lot sits on a slope. Level the ground first or adjust the markers with Move It.

In Cities: Skylines II

The CS2 equivalent is Parking Lot Tool by Torbi: draw a shape and it fills it with a finished parking lot that cars actually use. For Japanese-style coin parking with wheel stops, the channel’s playset adds a dedicated asset — see the Mod Stack. Parking Pricing then raises fees where demand is high, which nudges people towards transit.

FAQ

When does my city need parking lots?

A lot of roadside parking around venues, malls or a busy centre is the sign. A parking lot takes those cars off the street.

Why do cars still park on the street?

Roadside parking is easier for them. Disallow parking on the surrounding roads with TM:PE and the lot fills up.

My parking markers are in the wrong place — what now?

Select them with Move It and nudge them into position.

Do parking lots reduce traffic in Cities: Skylines?

They reduce the traffic caused by parking — cars slowing down, pulling out and circling for a space. Combined with a roadside parking ban they also free up a lane.

Do I need TM:PE for parking lots to work?

No, but it helps. TM:PE lets you ban roadside parking so cars use your lot, and its parking AI makes citizens search for spaces realistically.
