TL;DR ·

Part of this episode's recording failed, so it starts with a recap: the incoming country road is now a two-lane highway with an overpass and ramps, the main farm moved, and an intercity bus terminal sits next to the city bus terminal. Then the last general industry goes, a park inspired by Japanese city parks opens, the farms reach level 5 with a food factory, Westfield passes 20,000, and biofuel buses arrive.

What happens in this episode

The original recording of episode 13 failed, so it opens with a recap of what changed off camera. The four-lane country road coming into town is now a two-lane highway, with an overpass and on- and off-ramps. The main farm building moved and the fields were rearranged to make room. And an intercity bus terminal sits right across from the city bus terminal, so people don’t have to walk far between them.

How it was built

Fewer graveyards, more homes

Incinerators now do the job, so the graveyards are being emptied. A few low-rise streets go into the forest edge without damaging it much. The industrial area here is the last general industry for about 18,000 people. Removing the rest caused a small income dip, but with 1.49 million saved, more zones are the answer.

A park like in Japan

A new city park gets a small loop path, a café, restrooms, an info booth and street lights. I love how parks in Tokyo, Osaka or Nagoya make it easy to enjoy free time in a huge city. Japan is also the safest country I’ve ever visited: you can walk anywhere at any hour, and I want parks that feel that safe.

Ramps and a crossing

The rushed ramps from last time get reshaped with straight sections and wider curves. A weird little roundabout that nobody used is replaced with a simple crossing. One section becomes a national highway again because it allows higher speeds than a four-lane city road. Some of the alignment is purely cosmetic, which I occasionally just like to do.

Offices, walkways and services

New light and dense commercial zones and offices get a walkway between two roads from the start. A health centre and high-rise housing went in, plus checks on elder care, childcare and crematoriums.

Level 5 and 20,000

The farms reached level 5: large silos, fields, pastures and the food factory. At 20,000 citizens, Westfield unlocked the solar power plant and waste processing, a bakery and a lemonade factory. A new tile goes to farming, warehouses go in, and an ore area is prepared. The session ends with biofuel buses on new lines and a reputation level-up for the career institute.

FAQ

What unlocks with level-5 farming in Cities: Skylines?

The large grain silo, large fruit and crop fields, the large animal pasture and the food factory.

What unlocks at 20,000 citizens?

Among other things the solar power plant, the waste transfer facility and waste processing, plus unique factories such as the bakery and lemonade factory once their inputs exist.

Why put the intercity bus terminal next to the city bus terminal?

So passengers have only a short walk between regional and local buses.
