The story behind JAPAN map series

The JAPAN series (autumn 2020) is the root of the channel's Japanese focus. Before any city was built, it showed how to bring real places into Cities: Skylines.

Four tutorials cover the workflow: realistic heightmaps from terrain.party, cleaned up in Photoshop; street maps stitched into a single overlay; a faster overlay method using a styled Google map; and the full process from terrain to finished road layout.

Two time-lapses show the result: about five hours of editing to finish the channel's first map for the Steam Workshop, based on Google Maps and satellite data.

The map overlay tutorial is still one of the most-watched videos on the channel.
